Shaykh Ahmed Haneef is one of a growing number of scholars with style – his intimate knowledge of east and west, ineffable energy and sincere love of all things spiritual have placed him as a firm favourite with young Muslims everywhere.
Shaykh Haneef, born in Trinidad in the 1950s, was raised a Roman Catholic. Shaykh Haneef grew up during the 60s and 70s witnessing the political movements surrounding the Vietnam war and black power movement. Thoughts of injustice and disillusionment stayed with Shaykh Haneef when at 17 he left the warm shores of Trinidad to study in Canada. There, he campaigned for reform to the high school curriculum which at that time selectively streamed black students into inferior programs.
Shaykh Haneef’s deep sense of frustration with world politics spurred him to read political science at university. There, he discovered Marxism becoming an activist and student. However, this fascination was short-lived: “I became disenchanted with Marxism because of its lack of a spiritual dimension. I began to research religion to find one that combined spiritual truth with the pursuit of social justice. In the process, I found a Quran in the bookstore of my university which had a profound effect on me. I had found the religion I was looking for.” <p>Shaykh Haneef took his shahada (declaration of faith) four months later. “After about one year, when the Islamic Revolution was victorious, I became curious about Shiism,” he said. In 1980, Shaykh Haneef became a Shi'a and in 1993, moved to Iran with his family to study at the religious seminary in Qom, Iran.
Today, Shaykh Haneef continues to combine study with action and regularly lectures at masjids around the world, as well as hosting programs on channels such as PressTV. Propagating the spirit of Islam is an issue close to his heart, especially to those deprived of a religious and spiritual upbringing. “It is my hope to help cast the light of faith into the world of others”, he said.

The Jamaat’s next scheduled program will take place on Thursday 25th August, being the Jumeraat program, together with Majlis of Dahw al-Ardh & Majlis to bid farewell to the Hujjaj and Zawaar commencing at 7.45pm with Hadith al-Kisa' followed by Du'a Kumayl, Maghribayn Salaat at 8.21pm, Lecture by Shaykh Muhammed Reza Tajri and end with Ziyarat Waritha.
The President of the World Federation, Dr. Asgar Moledina and Chairman of Africa Federation, Alhaj Shabir Najafi will be visiting our center and will give a short talk.
Shaykh Muhammed Reza Tajri will begin Thursday’s discourse by analysing how man often wrongly defines himself by things that are contingent; not essential to his reality. This flawed idea dupes a person into believing that they are defined by what they have, be that in terms of material belongings or non-material identity markers, all the more so with one’s formal religious identity.
This will lead us into discussing the illusory facet of ‘ownership’ itself, citing verses that illustrate the attitude of the pharaoh, in the era of Musa (as).
The heart that finds it easier to soar to Allah, is one that recognises that it does not have any ownership… of anything – material or otherwise. The citing of several aḥādīth here, will facilitate our understanding of what it means to be spiritually ‘poor’, in front of Allah; and how this gives a person complete freedom in complete servitude to the Almighty.
The Jumah Khutbah this Friday 26th August will be delivered by Sheikh Muhammed Reza Tajri.
