The Executive Committee in conjunction and the Economic Upliftment Committee held a seminar on Debt Relief.
The seminar was introduced by Mahmood S Bhogadia - Head of Finance- who spoke on the need for a professionally managed community-wide micro-finance fund to serve the members and their spouses; who due to various reasons cannot raise funding through conventional sources of finance. He also a touched on the possibility of creating a community based 'crowd-funding scheme' with returns going back to our community members.
The seminar then proceeded with the main theme for the evening which was Debt Relief under UK insolvency laws. This section of the talk was presented by Honourable Abbasbhai Mithani QC.
Abbasbhai contrasted what was possible under the current UK insolvency laws with the Sharia dictates of debt relief especially the debt obligation under verses 2 and 10 of Surah Nisa. He spoke of the various forms of debt relief available to an individual and briefly touched on aspects of reliefs available to partnerships and Limited Companies.
The seminar then proceeded with a section on changes in pension provisions in the UK which was presented by the sponsors- Merit Legal solicitors
A presentation was also made by Merit legal solicitors to the attendees to highlight areas of their work and expertise.
The seminar attracted some 67 attendees and was one of the highest attended seminars organised by the EUC
The Executive committee and the EUC are grateful to Merit Legal solicitors for sponsoring this event and Honourable Abbasbhai Mithani for delivering the main talk for the evening.
The event ended with a collection for the Lady Fatema AS Trust - under their water well project and £140 was raised and remitted to this Charity.
